Music Influencer: Everything You Need To Know!

Wait, who exactly is an influencer? An influencer is a person who works to establish a certain presence on social media, whose opinion on different subjects, especially on trends that come up in the interested field elicits a significant impact on those who follow the individual. Hence, the word - Influencer, because he or she influences the masses by shaping their perspectives, thoughts, and views on different subjects that the internet deals with daily.

Now, a music influencer is a person who focuses on just the music industry and actively indulges in either making music, listening to music, or reviewing music. It can be all of them or just one of them. These influencers talk about music, be it their own, and develop a certain sense of originality in the content they make on a particular subject, that makes it their own.

Why would you want to become a music influencer in the first place?

Music influencers can not only give educational or informative content through their videos and posts but can also market their own music and slowly build a presence that can shape the opinion of the large masses in a very positive way. Being an influencer also indicates that once you do have a hold on a reliable follower count, brands would want to collaborate with you for better marketing and promotions. Some music influencers end up collaborating with music companies such as Fender or Gibson, while companies such as streaming platforms themselves, like Spotify, would collaborate with music influencers.

For example, take a look at theneedledrop on YouTube. He has a channel that hosts a bunch of review videos, and he does that across genres such as pop, hip-hop, rock, and so on. You could try that as well.

There are many content creators and influencers on different social media platforms and they were flooded during the pandemic. However, the number of music influencers, in particular, isn’t that many. So if you do choose to become a music influencer, chances are, that your competition isn’t that big. How do you become a music influencer? Do you need a degree for it? No. You just need a creative mind and a drive to ‘influence’ the crowd in a positive way. In this article, we have listed certain pointers to start with.

Choose your platforms carefully

As we’d previously mentioned, Instagram, TikTok, and even YouTube have the potential to make you go viral or make you reach your reliable following within a short period due to their features. Instagram with its Reels feature, has provided so many content creators the chance to showcase their talent. Youtube Shorts, Reels, and TikTok videos work similarly and once you figure out how your content gets pushed and how you could be flexible, you could pick one platform that would work the best for you. Try all the platforms initially. But gradually you will know on which platform you’d like to work more and which platform engages you the most. Be flexible when you are starting out. Check out the pros and cons of every platform and how you could earn revenue while working on the platform.

Collaborations

It is always best if you make connections and do collaborate when you are slowly building your following. That means uploading a duet with another music influencer, letting a popular dj remix your track and post about it, a collab with another artist you’re working with for your next single, and uploading content together.

For example, when Charlie Puth was making Left and Right, he was collaborating with Jungkook of BTS. Charlie Puth ended up uploading the making of the music with Jungkook and behind the scenes of the music video they shot together on TikTok and it instantly went viral. Of course, these artists are already popular, but you could take some inspiration and use it to your advantage when you are collaborating with another music influencer.

More often than not, they would also be looking for artists to collaborate with and this would work the best for both of you because their followers would end up following you and vice versa. It is a great idea to already have a good hand at content marketing because that way, you could help emerging musicians with their releases and help promote their music or merch. Always have a skill that you can rely on and something that other people, let's say, ‘clients’ would need help with. Be it social media marketing, content creation, or content marketing, other musicians would need any of these skills and would consider collaborating with you.

Maintain an Aesthetic on your page

Maintain an aesthetic on your official Instagram or TikTok page where you post and upload videos that represent you and are exclusive to you. Not only are influencer pages very pleasing to the eye, but they should also contain some substance. Sometimes you will find thousands of followers on an influencer’s page where there’s no defined aesthetic and just hundreds of videos that have thousands of views. Yup, that may work too, but it will be hard for a potential viewer to recognize your page from others because there are many influencers. Aesthetics is a way to stand out and make your page resonate with other people.

Post content consistently, but just because you have to post every Tuesday doesn’t necessarily mean you should post if you have nothing on your mind. Make sure that you note your ideas. If you are into mixing yourself, try to make a video of different mixes and styles you could turn into a popular song. For example, As It Was by Harry Styles but as an Afro Beat, a Technohouse track, or Acoustic, and so on. While editing your videos and making your posts, make sure you maintain a standard or a template and follow that to make your feed appear appealing and compelling to the eye.

Review Videos

A lot of people do review and reaction videos on YouTube so it is probably not recommended that well. However, you could concentrate on making videos, particularly music reviews. Let’s say a 30-second review of Anti-Hero, or why is Made You Look viral right now and you could do a voiceover on how the track became viral.

For such videos, of course, research is the most basic and important component so make sure that your research findings are authentic, new, and reliable. If you aren’t a video person, try to write reviews on your posts in the caption area. For this, though, you should have exceptional writing skills. People usually don’t read the caption fully so to keep your audience hooked to your content, make sure you present your information creatively.
